Quality of Life and Supportive Services

Cancer diagnosis and treatment have a profound affect on patients and their families. As part of our comprehensive cancer care program at Utah Cancer Specialists, we have integrated a Supportive Care and Rehabilitative Medicine program.  This care focuses on improving quality of life for you and your family as you face the challenges associated with cancer and its treatments. We concentrate on your well-being in terms of independence, happiness and ability to continue regular activity.  We address prevention and relief of suffering, treatment of pain as well as physical, psychological and spiritual impacts. This care and rehabilitation starts at the time of diagnosis and is coordinated through your oncologist to ensure the entire scope of treatment supports your cancer care and rehabilitation.

Supportive and Rehabilitative Medicine attends to the following areas:

  • Managing difficult symptoms by lessening pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, depression, anxiety, nausea, constipation, loss of appetite and other impacts that may accompany cancer and its treatment.

  • Enhancing support for you and your family by helping to identify what is important to you.  We want to promote the best quality of life and provide emotional support throughout the course of your illness.  We can help with needed referrals for care at home or in other settings, and will assist with co-ordination of insurance and/or community services.

  • Addressing changing goals of care by helping you consider care options and make decisions based on quality of life.  We will examine the benefits and burdens of care such as tests, surgeries, devices and medications.  We will also assist you and your family in determining when or if to begin or discontinue treatments.
